White and Golden Pearls
from the South Seas
By far the largest pearl-producing oyster, the Pinctada Maxima can grow to be as large as 12 inches in diameter. The pearls produced are the largest produced and typically range from 10 to 18mm in diameter. Also historically prized for their mother-of-pearl shell, these South Seas oysters can be of the silver-lipped or gold-lipped varieties, producing silver- or gold-hued pearls, respectively. Coming from the waters of the South Seas – Australia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Thailand – these pearls are known worldwide for their distinctive coloring and for their thick, satiny luster.
