Akoya Pearls from Japan and China
Pearls derived from the petite Akoya oyster (Pinctada Fucata) in Japan and China are the most commonly known pearls; ranging from 5 to 8mm in size, they are the round, white, lustrous gems that are often the gateway into pearl jewelry. The first commercially cultured pearl type, the Akoya are generally white and creamy with hints of other colors in the finish. Though Akoya pearls have achieved their place in market standards, Akoya pearl culturing is a difficult and delicate process, yielding only about 5% of its entire harvest.
